Fink Voices Disappointment: Lifeline Scholarships Stricken from State Budget
HARRISBURG — Rep. Wendy Fink (R-Red Lion) yesterday voted against a $45.55 billion state budget proposal and voiced her disappointment that Gov. Josh Shapiro failed to deliver on his campaign promise to help students in failing school districts.
“We went into this budget with the hope Shapiro would deliver on his campaign promise to fund a lifeline scholarship program that would help students trapped in the bottom 15% of school districts in the Commonwealth; but today, he abandoned that promise to make a deal with House Democrats who were unwilling to compromise and consider this invaluable scholarship program,” said Fink.
“I am disappointed in the governor for not holding firm on his commitment, and I do not feel it is right to support a budget in which House Republicans were not given a seat at the negotiation table,” continued Fink. “Democrats hold a one seat majority in the House. By excluding House Republicans from budget discussions, the left has shut out the half of the state we were elected to represent; this is simply unacceptable.”
Fink also commented on how the budget proposal overspends and does not adequately save for the future economic downturns many economists are predicting.
